Festival Horror: Needle Attacks Ignite Chaos

More than 240 people were arrested after women at France’s biggest summer music festival reported being jabbed with syringes and sexually assaulted — and the investigation is raising serious questions about public safety and what authorities knew.

Story Highlights

  • Over 240 arrests were made after nearly 150 women reported being pricked with syringes at France’s Fête de la Musique festival.
  • Two people were stabbed and multiple women reported sexual assault during the chaos at the open-air celebration.
  • French authorities confirmed online posts were calling for attacks on women at the event before it even began.
  • No syringes were found on detained suspects, and toxicology results have not been made public, leaving key questions unanswered.

A Night of Music Turned Dangerous

France’s Fête de la Musique — a nationwide open-air music celebration held every June — turned into a scene of chaos and fear this year. Nearly 150 women reported being jabbed with syringes by unknown attackers in the crowd. Two people were stabbed, including a 17-year-old found sitting in the street with stab wounds to the abdomen. Multiple women also reported sexual assault. French authorities responded with more than 240 arrests across the country.[14]

What made this worse is that it did not come out of nowhere. France’s Ministry of the Interior confirmed that social media posts had been circulating before the festival, calling on people to attack women at the event.[7] That means authorities had warning signs. The question now is whether enough was done to protect the public before things got out of hand.

What Police Found — and Didn’t Find

French police detained 12 suspects specifically tied to the syringe attacks. But here is where the story gets murky: investigators said they found no syringes and no other incriminating items on any of those detained. All 12 were later released, though legal proceedings are still ongoing.[9] The broader wave of 240-plus arrests covered a range of offenses tied to the night’s violence, not just the syringe incidents.[14]

Toxicology tests were run on some victims, but the results have not been released to the public. Authorities have not confirmed whether any victims were drugged with substances like Rohypnol or gamma-hydroxybutyrate — commonly known as GHB — which are sometimes used in drink- or needle-spiking attacks.[9] Without those results, it is impossible to say with certainty what was injected, or whether the syringe marks came from deliberate attacks or something else entirely.

Victims Believed They Were Targeted

Despite the lack of physical evidence recovered from suspects, the sheer number of victims reporting the same experience is hard to dismiss. Nearly 150 people told police they were pricked by a needle in the crowd and felt sick shortly afterward. At least 14 were seriously hurt.[7] One attacker was caught at the scene. Another was identified by a victim.[11] The pattern of reports — spread across multiple locations during the same event — points to something organized, not random.

Research on mass gatherings backs up the concern. A study of sexual assault cases found that 26% of reported assaults occurred at mass gatherings, and victims were far more likely to not know their attacker.[16] Festivals with large crowds, low lighting, and limited security create easy cover for predators. That is a known problem — and one that requires serious planning to prevent, not just a response after the fact.

The Bigger Picture: Women Deserve Better Protection

This story is about more than one festival in France. It is a warning. When authorities receive credible online threats targeting women at a public event, the response needs to match the threat. Deploying enough officers, screening for weapons, and having a fast-response plan are basic steps. If those were in place here, the results suggest they were not enough. Victims are left waiting for answers while investigators sort through a case with more questions than evidence.

The French government owes the public full transparency — including those toxicology results. Victims reported real symptoms, real injuries, and real trauma. Whether the syringe attacks were a coordinated drugging campaign or something else, 150 people do not report the same experience by coincidence. Accountability matters, and so does honesty about what happened that night.[13]
