Hush Money Bombshell Rocks Maine Race

Maine Democrats just handed their Senate nomination to a scandal-plagued oyster farmer — and now he’s headed straight for one of the toughest incumbents in the country.

Story Snapshot

  • Graham Platner won the Maine Democratic Senate primary on June 9, 2026, with 77.7% of the vote.
  • Platner will face Republican Senator Susan Collins in November — the only GOP senator up for reelection in a state Kamala Harris won in 2024.
  • Platner’s campaign survived multiple scandals, including allegations from his own former political director involving hush money.
  • Early polls show Platner slightly ahead of Collins, but Collins has a strong history of winning crossover votes from Democrats and independents.

Platner Crushes Primary Despite Scandals

Graham Platner, a Marine Corps veteran and oyster farmer from Maine, won the Democratic Senate primary on June 9 by a wide margin. He pulled in 77.7% of the vote, while sitting Governor Janet Mills finished a distant second at 16.7%. [10] Platner’s win came even as his campaign faced serious controversy in the final weeks — including a bombshell from his former political director, who accused the campaign of offering hush money. [11]

Some Maine Democrats had quietly hoped Platner would stumble badly enough in the primary that he’d step aside. [9] That didn’t happen. Instead, Platner’s campaign powered through the bad headlines and came out with a dominant win. His victory also effectively ended Governor Mills’ political career — she entered the race late and was soundly beaten. [10]

What the Polls Say — and What They Don’t

Two recent polls show Platner leading Collins in a general-election matchup. A University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll from May 27, 2026 showed Platner at 51% to Collins in a head-to-head race. [5] A separate University of Massachusetts Lowell and YouGov poll released June 5, 2026 showed Platner at 48% and Collins at 43%, with 6% undecided. [1] Those numbers give Democrats reason for hope heading into November.

But polls taken months before Election Day don’t tell the whole story. Collins has won reelection in Maine multiple times, including by pulling in crossover votes from Democrats and independents. [3] She has deep name recognition and strong fundraising. A lead in a June poll against a long-serving incumbent with broad appeal is a starting point, not a finish line.

Collins Is No Easy Target

Senator Susan Collins is the only Republican senator seeking reelection in a state that former Vice President Kamala Harris carried in 2024. [9] That makes her seat a top Democratic target. But Collins has beaten the odds before. She has won in Maine even when the national political winds were blowing hard against Republicans. Her ability to appeal to voters across party lines makes her one of the hardest incumbents in the country to unseat.

Platner is backed by progressive heavyweights like Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. [11] That base of support helped him win the primary. However, in a general election, those same endorsements could hurt him with the moderate and independent voters he needs to flip. Maine is not a deeply blue state, and Platner’s far-left backing may be a liability when the race moves beyond the Democratic base. Collins will have every reason to remind voters of that contrast all the way to November.
