(WatchDogReport.org) – Following President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris has been mocked by conservatives, who branded her speech that paid tribute to the incumbent president a “political eulogy.” In her first public statement since Biden announced he was stopping down on July 21 before officially endorsing Harris 30 minutes later, Harris shared a few words to honor Biden’s legacy.
Harris’s speech was described as “somber,” and she stopped herself before reading out her statement to encourage the audience to applaud. She referenced the president’s late son, Beau Biden, and stated that she first met Joe through Beau. She added that she recognized the same qualities in the president that Beau did. Harris praised Joe Biden for his “integrity,” his “honesty,” and his devotion to his Roman Catholic faith, despite it being contradicted by the Biden administration’s policies on gender, sexuality, and abortion rights. She claimed he had accomplished more in one term than most US presidents.
Some leading Democrats, such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, were initially hesitant to endorse Harris. Pelosi endorsed Harris the day after Biden’s decision to step down, and Jeffries and Schumer declared their support for her on July 23.
Former President Barack Obama has stopped short of endorsing or even mentioning Harris as a presidential candidate. Like Harris, he praised Biden’s political legacy and his work in public service. He stressed, however, in his statement that Biden would not have stepped down if it were not in the best interests of the country and acknowledged that Biden did not give up on the fight easily.
Obama concluded that the Democratic Party would settle on an “outstanding” nominee without specifying who he thought this should be. Reports suggested that Obama kept his silence about Harris to avoid being seen as a “kingmaker.”
