(WatchDogReport.org) – Hollywood director Aaron Sorkin suggested in an op-ed published by the New York Times that the Democratic Party will maintain the White House if they nominate Utah Republican Senator Mitt Romney. Sorkin, who is the creator of the political TV series West Wing, wrote the guest essay before US President Joe Biden announced he was suspending his re-election campaign and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to be the nominee.
Sorkin said he believes Romney would guarantee a Democratic victory in the 2024 presidential election because he’s a moderate conservative who could attract not only many independents but also many moderate Democrats and Republicans. The Utah senator was the Republican nominee during the 2012 presidential election, when he lost against then-President and Democratic nominee Barack Obama, in a campaign where many Democratic leaders made radical declarations. One of these was then-Vice President Joe Biden, who claimed that African-Americans had to be scared about the possibility of a Republican victory, as he said that Romney would put them “back in chains.”
The director and writer said that one of the main problems the Democratic Party has in its goal of beating former President and Republican nominee Donald Trump is that no one is polling better than President Biden. He added that, in such a complicated scenario, the party should pick Romney as the running mate because such a move would show Americans that they value the United States over the party itself.
Sorkin explained that the Democratic Party is currently in a situation where it has to take special measures to guarantee a victory in November’s electoral event, as a return of Trump to the White House would be a tragedy for the United States. The director also said that even when Romney is a traditional Republican who disagrees with most of the liberal agenda, he argued that things like progressive tax reform or abortion are secondary issues right now.
