Dems Lash Out at Biden Over Yemen Airstrikes

(WatchDogReport.org) – Progressive Democrats blasted US President Joe Biden after he officially authorized numerous airstrikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen without receiving approval from Congress. The Houthis are considered by numerous governments and organizations a terrorist group, one supported by the Iranian regime.

Following President Biden’s announcement about US and British forces’ airstrikes against the Houthis after their attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, Washington Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal said his move was “unacceptable.” Jayapal, who is also the head of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, shared a New York Times article on her Twitter account that criticized the commander-in-chief’s decision. She also claimed that President Biden was violating Article 1 of the United States Constitution, which states that any military action needs to be authorized by the House of Representatives.

California Democratic Representative Ro Khanna also blasted the Democratic leader by claiming that he was violating the Constitution by ordering the strikes. Khanna explained that while President Biden consulted an “international coalition” to plan the airstrikes, he never asked Congress for authorization. He added that the president’s actions could eventually push the country into another war in the Middle East, which could have unpredictable consequences.

On their Twitter accounts, Montana Democratic Representative Cori Bush and Oregon Democratic Representative Val Hoyle also claimed that what President Biden was doing was unconstitutional. Bush even said that the airstrikes were “illegal” and that the American people didn’t want their taxes to be wasted in endless wars that would end with the “killing of civilians.”

Another member of the so-called “Squad” who also criticized President Biden for the airstrikes was Michigan Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib. On her Twitter account, she said that the commander-in-chief wasn’t respecting the separation of powers and claimed that his decision to overstep the Congress is indefensible. Tlaib said that his actions could affect his popularity as the vast majority of Americans don’t want the country to be involved in more wars.
