(WatchDogReport.org) – New York City Council Member Inna Vernikov recently attracted attention by wearing a distinctive dress at the Manhattan Republican Club’s annual gala. The blue and white evening gown prominently displayed the Jewish star and the Israeli flag.
Vernikov’s attire was accompanied by a message emphasizing the importance of displaying Jewish identity without fear. She urged fellow Jewish individuals to proudly exhibit symbols such as the Star of David or express support for Israel.
The councilwoman, who was born in Ukraine and is of Jewish heritage, has been an outspoken advocate for democracy and human rights. She highlighted concerns regarding attacks on American Jews and voiced opposition against Vladimir Putin’s actions in her homeland.
Vernikov credited the dress to celebrity designer Irina Shabayeva, known for her success on Project Runway. Shabayeva’s swift creation of the dress within 24 hours drew attention. The designer hails from Georgian, Jewish, and Russian origins.
In an Instagram post showcasing her in the blue and white gown, Vernikov expressed concern, stating that numerous Jewish individuals in New York and university students across the nation feel hesitant to showcase their Israel support, Jewish identity, or to wear a kippah or Star of David. She emphasized the need to overcome fear, urging everyone to proudly embrace their Jewish identity, be vocal, and stand boldly, emphasizing that their residence is where they live without intimidation.
This bold fashion statement echoed the sentiments expressed by other public figures in the past, such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who famously donned a “Tax the Rich” gown at the Met Gala in 2021. However, the context and message conveyed by Vernikov’s attire focused on supporting Jewish identity and expressing solidarity with Israel, standing apart from Ocasio-Cortez’s political statement.
The councilwoman’s attire choice was seen in light of the recent surge in antisemitic incidents following Hamas’ attack on Israel, as reported by the Anti-Defamation League.
Vernikov’s dress sparked conversations, drawing comparisons to previous bold fashion statements made by public figures. However, her focus remained on advocating for Jewish identity and support for Israel, reflecting her personal and political stances.
