(WatchDogReport.org) – According to a Washington Examiner February 13 report, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who was recently impeached by Congress, rejected an “urgent” appeal from candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. for Secret Service Protection. In a July 21, 2023 letter, Mayorkas formally dismissed the request without providing a reason.
In a letter sent to Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, Mayorkas said that the independent presidential candidate submitted a request to the DHS for Secret Service protection on May 26, 2023. He added that he declined to identify Kennedy for US Secret Service protection in accordance with Title 18, US Code, “Section 3056(a)(7).”
The Homeland Security secretary’s letter was officially included in a second batch of documents provided to legal watchdog group Judicial Watch. The records included 99 blank and redacted pages of data. The group’s president, Tom Fitton, blasted Mayorkas’ decision against the independent candidate. In a statement, Fitton claimed that it was “despicable” that the Homeland Security secretary refused protection for Kennedy and said it was scandalous that it took a federal FOIA lawsuit to reveal “this information.”
As reported by the conservative media outlet, Mayorkas hasn’t been fully transparent at his agency, which many Republican leaders blame for the current crisis at the country’s southern border. The secretary was impeached with a final vote of 214 to 213, making him the first cabinet official in the nation to be impeached since William Belknap back in 1876.
In the first batch of documents provided to Judicial Watch, numerous papers revealed that the US Secret Service reviewed Kennedy’s formal request for security. In the documents, officials ordered that no one in the agency should respond to the independent candidate. In one of the pages of redacted emails, a top US official said that providing “no response” to him or his security was “needed.”
While the impeachment against Mayorkas passed in the House, many experts believe that the Senate will eventually fail to convict him.
