(WatchDogReport.org) – Over the last three years, the Biden administration has maintained that the United States border is secure. Recently, President Biden contradicted Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ statements by admitting he does not think that is the case. The president said the border has not been secure for the past decade.
As of December 2023, the frequency of interactions between migrants had reached levels not seen in recent memory. The Republican-led House Appropriations Committee has laid out the grounds for impeachment against Mayorkas, including willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law and breach of public trust.
In his testimony before Congress, Mayorkas falsely claimed that the border is closed, secure, and under DHS operational control. On multiple appearances with different networks, he repeated similar claims.
While visiting Texas in September of 2022, former White House press secretary Jen Psaki voiced her worries about border security. Conversely, then-border Czar, Vice President Kamala Harris, said that there is no threat at the US-Mexico border, and her administration was struggling because of the Trump administration’s flawed immigration system.
While speaking at the 45th Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Gala, Biden reaffirmed his and Mayorkas’s dedication to reforming immigration policy and improving migrant border management.
In light of conservatives’ rejection of the reported provisions of legislation being considered in bipartisan Senate discussions, Biden’s accusation that Republicans are impeding border security mirrors recent rhetoric from the White House. The president should demonstrate his good faith by taking immediate actions to secure the border, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson, who also indicated on Friday that Biden may disregard any further limits in a possible Senate pact.
In 2020, when Biden was a presidential candidate, he promised to roll back Trump’s strict border policy. The “Remain in Mexico” policy, which had kept most asylum applicants in Mexico while they awaited decisions on their persecution claims, was also terminated by Biden, and he put an end to Trump’s plans to build a wall along the US-Mexico border. Claiming to have requested additional border authorities on his first day in office, Biden is referring to proposed legislation that would streamline the asylum procedure for new arrivals and provide a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants currently in the US.
Biden has been under pressure from Republicans to reinstate Trump-era border restrictions, including the detention of illegal border crossers. It was anticipated that the House Homeland Security Committee would pass an impeachment resolution against Alejandro Mayorkas, the secretary of homeland security, for allegedly not enforcing the laws.
