(WatchDogReport.org) – Rock music lost a legend with the death of Denny Laine, a key figure in The Moody Blues and co-founder of Wings, who died at the age of 79.
Laine’s wife, Elizabeth Hines, took to Instagram to share the sad news, mentioning that her husband passed away peacefully while she played his favorite Christmas tunes by his bedside. Hines revealed that Laine had been in the ICU and on a ventilator due to Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), which ultimately claimed his life.
“Denny fought every day, was strong and brave, never complained,” Hines shared, expressing gratitude for the love and support they received during Laine’s health crisis.
She also thanked the medical team for their hard work and compassion and spoke about Laine’s impact on her life, calling him a wonderful person who made her days vibrant.
Laine’s musical journey started young, inspired by jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. He was a founding member of The Moody Blues in 1964, known for their hit “Go Now.” Later, he co-founded Wings with Paul and Linda McCartney, achieving chart-topping success with hits like “Band on the Run” and “My Love.”
During an interview with Billboard, Laine mentioned that during their early days, The Moody Blues had a sort of carefree vibe, and the band expanded on that. He expressed gratitude to Mike and Ray for persuading him to join their band, as it pulled him out of Birmingham and opened up opportunities.
His collaboration with McCartney was harmonious, allowing creative freedom while working together. Laine co-wrote songs like “Mull of Kintyre,” a UK chart-topper in 1977. McCartney paid tribute to Laine, recalling their time together and highlighting Laine’s talent, humor, and helpful nature.
Before Wings, Laine played with The Moody Blues for a brief period, but his role was pivotal in the band’s early transition.
Recognized in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Moody Blues in 2018, Laine continued performing live until his final shows earlier this summer, emphasizing the irreplaceable connection with his audience.
Denny Laine’s legacy as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist will resonate in rock history, leaving behind a treasure trove of music and memories.
