Rocket Fire Blasts US Troops in Iraq

( – On January 21, the day after President Joe Biden’s inauguration, twin suicide bombings killed at least 32 people in Iraq. Less than a month later, on February 15, rocket fire killed an American contractor and injured a service member. Now, another attack has rocked the country.

According to reports, multiple rockets hit Iraq’s Balad Air Base on Sunday, April 18. Base commander, Maj. Gen. Diaa Mohsen told the country’s news agency that two rockets exploded inside, where US trainers were. The attack left two security forces injured.

This reportedly took place after a drone attack targeted a US coalition near an Iraqi airport, which caused damage to a building and a large fire.

Operation Inherent Resolve Spokesman Col. Wayne Marotto condemned the attacks. He said each one “undermines the authority of Iraqi institutions, rule of law and Iraqi national sovereignty.” The colonel called the attack on the base an act of terrorism and said there will be a “severe response” from Iraq’s security forces.
