4 DEAD After Sudden Collapse Reported – Dozens More Hurt

(WatchDogReport.org) – There are traditions around the world that are dangerous and seem somewhat insane to those watching on television, like the annual running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. This is where crowds of people try to run through the narrow city streets before getting impaled on a horn. In El Espinal, Colombia, some people celebrate the Roman Catholic Church feast day of St. Peter and St. Paul by facing off against the massive animals. This year, tragedy struck — but this time, it wasn’t because of the bulls.

Spectators had filled the seats in the three-tiered wooden stadium bleachers to watch the participants in action when the structure suddenly collapsed without warning. Proving that cell phones with cameras are absolutely everywhere, videos of the heart-stopping scene were posted to social media within minutes.

Reports from the site indicate four people lost their lives, including an 18-month-old child, with an unknown number of injured. Hospital emergency rooms throughout the region were flooded with patients with some estimates running as high as 500 individuals needing medical attention.

Colombia’s president-elect Gustavo Petro expressed his condolences and his desire to see these kinds of events become part of his country’s history, not its future. He made reference to a 1980 incident similar to this in Sincelejo, where the collapse killed 222 people and injured several hundred more.
